Installing WordPerfect 8 after WordPerfect 7

Judging from the number of messages I've read on CompuServe forums and Internet newsgroups, installing WordPerfect 8 when a version of WordPerfect 7 is already on the system, isn't exactly a walk in the park. There are important issues to consider before you begin.

The ideal situation is to remove WordPerfect 7 before installing WordPerfect 8. The problem is, if you remove the WordPerfect 7 files, you won't be able to transfer over any of the customization that you did in WordPerfect 7. So, what if you don't have enough disk space for both applications? What do you do then?

In this article, I'll explain what you need to consider before installing WordPerfect 8. I'll give you some steps to follow if you decide to remove WordPerfect 7 first or if you decide to keep both applications for a while. There are differences in how you should remove WordPerfect 7, so there are two separate sections to cover removing WordPerfect 7 first and removing WordPerfect 7 after installing WordPerfect 8.

Customization and Disk Space

There are two main issues: customization and disk space. If you've customized WordPerfect 7 (see the sidebar titled "Customizing WordPerfect" for more information), the WordPerfect 8 setup program transfers most of it during installation. However, you have to leave WordPerfect 7 on your system for this transfer to take place.

If you're forced to remove WordPerfect 7 due to inadequate disk space, you can still keep all the customization that you've done—you just have to transfer it manually. In other words, you'll have to make copies of certain files and then copy them to the correct locations. If you have back issues of WordPerfect for Windows Magazine, see the December 1997 Troubleshooting article titled "Surviving the WordPerfect 8 Upgrade", which covers manually transferring your customization from WPWin 6.1 or WP 7 to WP 8. The next best thing is probably Corel's Knowledge Base Technical Information Document (TID) #12889, entitled "Transition issues from WordPerfect 6.1 & 7 to WordPerfect 8 ".

If you don't have any customization that you want preserved, then disk space isn't an issue. By all means, remove WordPerfect 7 before you install WordPerfect 8. It's the least problematic approach to take.

Removing WordPerfect 7 First

Before you do anything, poke around in the Office7 subtree and make sure there isn't anything in there that you need to keep. For example, sometimes documents get saved in one of the folders under Office7. If you've created any macros or templates, you'll want to make copies of them. If you see anything you think you might need later, copy it onto a floppy (or somewhere else on your hard disk). Remember to catch any of the bonus applications, like Sidekick, that you want to hang onto. Finally, make sure you have the minimum system requirements (see the sidebar titled "System Requirements for WordPerfect 8" for more information).

When you're ready to remove WordPerfect 7, choose Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs (Figure 1). Select Corel Business Applications then choose Add/Remove.
Note: If you don't see Corel Business Applications, look for Corel WordPerfect Suite 7.

If you don't see either of them in the list, run Corel's Remove program instead. Choose Start, Run, Browse. Locate the \corel\office7\appman folder. Double-click the Corel Remove Program icon (see Figure 2) and follow the prompts.

After you've deleted the program files, you need to remove the WordPerfect entries from the Registry. Everyone I've talked to insists that cleaning up the Registry before installing an update is the best defense against the transient, impossible-to-track, hair-pulling problems that can crop up later.

Rather than do the clean up manually, get your hands on the Cleanreg utility. Its designed to clean up both WordPerfect Suite 7 and Office Professional 7 entries. It's available at Corel's FTP site, or in Library 1 (New Uploads) in the COFILES forum on CompuServe. The file is only about 100K so it won't take long to download.

Save it in a safe place apart from the Corel directory structure, like in a folder just for utilities (i.e. c:\utilities or something similar). Choose Start, Run, Browse , then locate the folder where you saved Cleanreg. Double-click the Cleanreg file icon. This program runs "in the background" so you won't see anything on your screen. You'll get a message when Cleanreg is through, so be patient.

Note: The Cleanreg utility should only be used on systems running Windows 95. DO NOT run it on an NT system. As you read this, there may be a new Cleanreg utility for Windows NT available. Contact Corel at 800-77COREL or check the WPWin FTP site.

Installing WordPerfect 8 with WordPerfect 7

Since WordPerfect is installed into its own directory structure, it isn't a problem to have both on your system at the same time. Unless you say otherwise, WordPerfect 7 is installed into the Office7 subtree and WordPerfect 8 is installed into the Office8 subtree--both in the Corel folder on your hard disk.

Before you start the WordPerfect 8 Setup program, remove all TSR and other programs from memory (except for Windows 95 itself). Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Close Program dialog box. Select an entry then choose End Task. Do this for all of the entries except Explorer and Systray.

During the installation, you'll be asked if you want to "share files" with WordPerfect 7. You MUST answer No to that question or you'll find that removing WordPerfect 7 without affecting WordPerfect 8 is next to impossible.

Removing WordPerfect 7 After Installing WordPerfect 8

When you are ready to remove WordPerfect 7, there are a couple of things you need to do. First, rename the installation profile, then make copies of important files. The installation profile (nam.ip) file gets updated when you install WordPerfect 8, so it has WordPerfect 8 information in it now. In Explorer, locate the corel\office7\appman\ profile folder. Right-click the nam.ip file then select Rename (Figure 2). Type nam.old then press Enter.

Next, make copies of important files. When you remove the WordPerfect 7 program, the entire Office7 subtree is deleted off the hard disk, so you'll lose custom templates, macros, documents—anything that is stored in that subtree. For a complete list of files and locations, see the December 1997 Troubleshooting article titled "Surviving the WordPerfect 8 Upgrade", or refer to TID #12889 "Transition issues from WordPerfect 6.1 & 7 to WordPerfect 8 ". Copy the files into the WordPerfect 8 directories. After you're sure you've copied over everything you need, you're ready to remove WordPerfect 7.

Choose Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs . Select Corel Business Applications (Figure 1), then choose Add/Remove. If you don't see Corel Business Applications, try Corel WordPerfect Suite 7. If you don't see either of them in the list, run Corel's Remove program instead. Choose Start, Run, Browse. Locate the \corel\office7\appman folder. Double-click the Corel Remove Program icon (see Figure 2) and follow the prompts.

In the section that discusses removing WordPerfect 7 before installing WordPerfect 8, I talked about the Cleanreg utility, which cleans up the Corel entries in the Registry. Don't run it now! Since you've installed WordPerfect 8, the Registry now contains valid Corel entries that you don't want removed. If you've gone ahead and done it, you'll have to reinstall WordPerfect 8 to restore the Registry entries.

If you think this is a lot of trouble to go through just to install an update...you're right. It is. But it's the whole "ounce of prevention..." thing. If you're willing to invest a little more time up front, you'll save hours of frustration down the line.
